BANEGAS, Natalia

Researcher in the “Instituto de Investigación Animal del Chaco Semiárido (IIACS)” from INTA. Teacher at the Edaphology Chair of the Faculty of Agronomy and Zootechnics, UNT.

I work on issues related to the impact of livestock production on soil quality indicators, carbon capture, and soil organic matter dynamics. Currently, I am working on long-term experiments in pastoral and silvopastoral” systems of the Dry Chaco region. I aim to generate local values for a carbon (C) balance in the region.

FERNÀNDEZ, Pedro
(PhD fellow at INTA)

I am interested in the environmental and socio-economic impact of livestock at different scales. At present, I am studying trade-offs between meat production and carbon stock for silvopastoral systems in the dry chaco. Also, I am studying spatial determinants of cattle distribution in the dry chaco.

(Researcher at CONICET)
Workplace: Facultad de Ciencias Forestales (UNaM), El dorado, Argentina

I work on issues related to Land Use Systems in the Argentine Atlantic Forest. I am particularly interested in studying its evolution over time and its performance in socio-environmental terms.

HURTADO FERRATÉ, Sara Marina
(PhD fellow at CONICET)

During my ecology degree, I developed a great interest in research on various topics, particularly the study of invertebrates as bioindicators. I am currently interested in researching insects, particularly leafcutter ants (Formicidae: Myrmicinae), which play a fundamental role in the ecosystems they inhabit, despite being considered harmful to crops. These herbivores are key in structuring the Chaco landscape, and I will study the factors that shape these communities and their ecological functions in Chaco remnants of Santiago del Estero, Argentina.

LOTO, Dante Ernesto
(PhD fellow at CONICET)

I am interested in the carbon dynamics in woody biomass in Dry Chaco forests, in relation to land uses such as fires, livestock and forest use. Currently, I am in charge of the fieldwork and database development of data from permanent forest plots at the regional level, established in the dry Chaco since 2007.

MONTII, Lía F
(Researcher at CONICET)

I work on issues related to plant ecology (native and exotic) and on the ecosystem's dynamics and function. Currently, I am interested in integrating knowledge at the nature-society interface to develop adaptive management strategies for invasive species promoting biodiversity conservation and social well-being.

SPESCHA, Verónica

I work on issues related to Urban Ecology. Currently, I am studying the interactions between the socio-economic structure of cities, and the diversity and functioning of urban vegetation (Public green spaces and Urban gardens).

(Assistant researcher CONICET)
Workplace: "Instituto de Estudios para el Desarrollo Social” (INDES) CONICET-UNSE and the botanical garden of the Universidad Nacional de Santiago del Estero.

I am currently investigating the relationship between rural communities and the use of resources in the Chaco forest in the northwest of Santiago del Estero, and how this use would affect the biodiversity and sustainability of this environment. I work in different communities that have forests, and in these communities we install permanent plots to monitor the structure and dynamics of the vegetation over time. I specifically analyze how the nesting of Melipona bees is affected by the use of firewood, and I measure the natural regeneration in open clearings to determine the best strategy for the restoration of the most degraded fragments".
